Social Status and/or Occupation: Nell is both an actor in a rather shabby variety show and a prostitute.
Brief physical description of your character: Nell looks rather androgynous which has helped in his act in the variety show – a comedy double where he dresses as a woman. It has also helped him on his way into the beds of many a man. He has long, rather straggly light brown hair and brown eyes. Although he owns a few expensive pieces of clothing, mostly gifts, he still cannot help but appear as what he is.


Brief description of your characters history, including family: Nell was the child of a theatre owner and an actress. His parents married soon after his birth and remained together until his mother’s death when Nell was five years old. She caught a chill and worsened quickly due to the inability to afford medical support for herself. Nell’s father spent lavishly on her funeral, an expense he could not afford, feeling guilty for being unable to prevent her death. He ended up in debt, using the theatre as collateral. He also began to drink heavily. Despite this he was a kind father and Nell was well taken care of growing up in the theatre. However, his father’s drink eventually caught up with him and he expired from liver disease when Nell was eleven.
This left the young Nell in a precarious situation – too young to run his father’s theatre and with the debts his father had procured. Enter Harry Fisher stage right. Harry brought the theatre out right and promised Nell that if he worked for him he would hold the theatre in his care until Nell came of age. The work Harry suggested was prostitution.
Harry took Nell under his wing, converting the theatre into a brothel of kinds with variety shows during the day and rather more risky performances in the evening. He groomed the young boy to gain him influence and soon set about attracting a better class on men as Nell’s clients.
Nell is rather in awed of Harry if not exactly in love and desperate to please him. Despite Harry seeing him as only another part of his business Nell is sure Harry thinks of him as special.
The other important person in Nell’s life is the French Ambassador Léon Belmont. Nell was frightened of him at first after the rumours about the blood thirsty nature of the revolutionaries but has slowly learned to trust the older man. Léon used Nell as a spy for the revolution which Nell does not enjoy. He his certain they’re going to all end up hanged for treason.
Despite that he feels torn between Harry and the life he has always know, and Léon and the new exciting world he offers.

One or two plots which you would like to play out in the community: Nell getting into trouble with the law, Nell meeting Léon’s wife.
